Expelled woman, son return home after court orders

BUTWAL, MAR 04 - Ganga Subedi, who was thrown out of the house by her in-laws with her newborn child, returned home on Sunday after two years of living as a pariah with her son.
Ganda Subedi with her son.
After the District Court of Rupandehi ordered Ganga’s in-laws to let her in, she and her son entered her husband’s house in Butwal -11 at the presence of police, women rights activists and civil society members. Ganga’s attempt to enter the house at first was meted by resistance from her mother-in-law, Laxmi, who had locked the main gate to keep her out. But the security personnel and rights activists broke the lock to let her in.
Ganga’s husband, Krishna Kumar Subedi, was not present at the occasion. After kicking Ganga and their son from the house, it is said that he has been living in Kathmandu.
Although the court, on the first hearing of the case, cleared the way for Ganga to live in the house with her in-laws, she remains uncertain as to how she would find a place for herself and her son in the absence her husband.
Ganga said that she and her son were disowned and kicked out from the house by her in-laws for not bringing in enough dowry, including a car. She said her in-laws started abusing her since the second day of her marriage with Krishna Kumar. She was thrown out of the house many times in the past, but she always came back on the advice of her own relatives.
One time, she said that her in-laws had drove her away when she was two months pregnant with her son.
She was accepted back to the house after she gave birth to the son, but her stay was brief. Ganga was sent packing again with her son.
She said she was left to fend for herself with the child, which she did for two years. During this time, she filed a case at the court demanding compensation.
The court has yet to give the verdict on the case. For now, Ganga and her son can stay in the house as per the court’s orders.
